Can A Coffee-Lover Still Have White Teeth?

*This is a sponsored post and is in collaboration with Smile Brilliant. Read until the end to find out how you can win $$$ off of a whitening kit!

Hey hey friends!

I hope that all of you are doing extremely well. If you live in the US, then you know that school is winding down and summer is literally RIGHT. AROUND. THE CORNER. I honestly can’t wait. Even though I’m going to be working and taking summer classes, I don’t start either until late May, so I get a good two weeks to relax and, of course, SLEEP IN!!

I understand that most of my readers are college students or young adults, which is great because I’m really able to relate to you guys on a personal level. At this stage in our lives, we tend to be super busy and productive. We either are in school full-time with part time jobs, doing internships, or starting our lives in the career we pursued while in college. Even though all of these things are great, they’re EXTREMELY draining, and at some point, you have to turn to something as a pick-me-up.

And that’s how coffee came to be.

Okay, just kidding. I don’t actually know the origin of coffee, but I do know that it is commonly used by majority of the world. Despite it’s energizing benefits, the one thing that sucks about constantly drinking coffee is the effect it has on your teeth, ugh. I used to not be concerned about my teeth, but one day I got out of the shower and realized they were looking a bit yellow. I feel this is something people don’t really talk about because let’s be honest, it’s kind of embarrassing. We shouldn’t have to hide our wide-mouthed laugh or big toothy grin because we LOVE coffee (or even tea for that matter). I know there are tons of “ways” to fix this already out on the market like whitening strips or bleaching toothpastes, but something I have never tried before was presented to me: a whitening kit.

Smile Brilliant, a teeth whitening company, was generous enough to send me over a free whitening kit to try and review for you guys. I was a little hesitant because a lot of whitening products, like the ones mentioned above, haven’t worked for me in the past. I ended up doing them diligently with zero results. The whitening kit from Smile Brilliant ACTUALLY worked for me. First, they had me create a mold of my teeth so that the mouthpieces for whitening fit my mouth perfectly. The molds were then placed in a shipping envelope with the label on it, which they provide, and was sent back to the headquarters. The custom-fit dental trays came in the mail about a week to a week and a half later. I was extremely appreciative of this because I didn’t have to deal with any discomfort during the whitening process since the mouthpieces fit so well!

The whitening kit also came with whitening gel and desensitizing gel. The names of both of these gels basically describes what they do! These gels come in separate syringes which you squirt out onto the mouthpieces. Make sure that you don’t put too much product, or else the gel will overflow and get on your tongue. You’ll end up wasting product, and the gel is definitely not meant for the taste buds. You then insert the mouthpieces in your mouth, and it pretty much feels like you’re putting on a retainer. They recommend leaving the whitening gel on for 1-2 hours, the desensitizing gel on for 15-20 minutes, and to not eat or drink anything for at least 30 minutes after the process. This was one of the things I struggled with and found difficult with the product. Because I had to wait to eat afterwards, the best time to whiten for me was at night after dinner. However, as a student I was always SO tired by nighttime, so I had to stay up an extra two hours to do the whitening process. I finally found my personal groove, and this might be helpful for you! I’d put on the whitening gel right after dinner and in the meantime, I’d study or watch an episode of America’s Next Top Model. Then, I’d put on the desensitizing gel and go take a shower because my showers are usually around 15-20 minutes. Guys, I literally thought I was a GENIUS by doing this. By the time I got out of the shower, took off the mouthpieces, dried off, got dressed, and put on lotion it had been a good 30 minutes, and I was free to grab water or a small snack before bed.

For me, the overall process took about a month to a month and a half only because I did not whiten every day. If you have sensitive teeth, the kit advises you to whiten every other day, and my teeth are very sensitive! I’m pretty sure if you whitened every day, the process would wrap up in a shorter period of time! I really struggled at first when it came to getting used to the whitening process and how to make my personal time work with the whitening time, but after I got the hang of it, I really didn’t mind it and it even became a part of my nightly routine. The kit is a bit pricey, being around $150, but ANYTHING that works correctly and efficiently will be costly. Plus, it allows you to still drink your coffee and have pretty teeth, and that’s a major win/win situation.
